Original U.S. Civil War Rare Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by Ames Mfg. Co. with Wire-Wrapped Grip

Regular price $895.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cuillere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts, a wood with leather wrapped sword grip, and a nice blade. The leather of the grip is mostly intact, and in good shape with a nice coating, but there is some heavy wear. This example was bound with brass wire which is in great shape overall.

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is very faded and no longer legible. However we do know that “D.R.” was an inspector for the Ames company.

On the other side it is marked-

U.S.N.
D.R.
186?

The blade is in fair shape, however it has some heavy oxidation which has been cleaned in spots. There is an additional inspector D.R. mark on the pommel, indicating inspection by Daniel Reynolds, one of many inspectors working at Ames during the U.S. Civil War. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number BI16 / 466. The brass basket has some wear and denting as shown.

Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year! Ready to display!
