Original U.S. Cold War Air Force P-4A Flight Helmet with Paint Scheme by General Textile Mills - Dated 1957

Regular price $495.00

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Available. This is an excellent condition 1957 Dated U.S. Air Force size large P-4A flight helmet by General Textile Mills that comes complete with its pull down spring loaded tint visor. This helmet does have the plug on the left side for the mask microphone, however the rest of the avionics package was either removed, or never installed. Based on the glue residue near the "pigtail" hole, which is now plugged, this helmet was refurbished post service, had the avionics removed, and has a new P4-B size large liner installed.

This is probably when the very attractive red paint job was applied, with white and blue stripes protruding across the dome, almost in the shape of a flag. The interior of the helmet is crumbling in spots so there is material that comes out, so care should be taken when handling. The helmet is in overall great shape. The data label on the inside reads:

HELMET, FLYING, TYPE P-4A
SIZE: LARGE
SPECIFICATION MIL-H-7328B(USAF)
DWG. 56D3508-3
DATE OF MANUFACTURE DEC 1957
GENERAL TEXTILE MILLS, INC

The USAF P-4 flight helmet was standardized in 1955 as a continuation of P-3 with improved avionics in order to make helmet headset communications and oxygen mask dynamic microphone compatible with aircraft intercommunication set AN AIC-10. the new H-75/AIC headset system was added as well as a new earphone cushions spring mounted and tethered to short nylon strings which protruded through the lateral helmet walls to be secured over a rubber over a rubber lock-nut and snubber bar. The P-4 was used with A-13A/MS22001 A-14 oxygen mask.

The P-4A standardized in 1957 has a new visor mechanism that replace the side latching design with a tracked visor securing system actuated by grasping a central rubber knob and pulling the visor down into position. The newly assembled P-4A helmets made use of the new fiberglass shell material that replaced the earlier phenolic resin and molded cotton duck material.

This is a great example, ready for further research and display.
