Original U.S. Indian Wars Model 1872 Federal Issue Chasseur Style Pattern Kepi with Regimental or GAR 137th Insignia - Size 7⅛

Original Item: Only one available. This is a phenomenal example of an Indian Wars Issue Model 1872 chasseur-style kepi in good condition, as issued to both enlisted men and officers during this period. This example bears attached numbers 137 to the front, which could indicate issue to a member of the 137th New York Infantry, but we can’t find any information about them post-Civil War. It could also be the number of a GAR post, but the kepi has Federal buttons, so this is unlikely.This Federal Chasseur Pattern Kepi features fabric of very fine blue wool broadcloth. The crown stands nearly 2 1/4" high at the front, 4 1/2" at the rear seam and the top is 4 1/2" in diameter, stiffened with a pasteboard beneath the lining. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the rear and stiffened with leather. The cap's interior is lined with the head-wrapping black cloth which is very tight in the center. The Moroccan leather sweatband is 1 1/8" wide. The flat visor is original to the hat, and composed of tarred leather, and on it is the size sticker, 7⅛.There are two brass Federal Eagle buttons on either side of the cap to which the chinstrap is secured. There is no maker’s marking we could find. The crown of the cap has some heavy mothing with scattering mothing in other spots. There is heavy wear to the visor and chinstrap.Indian Wars and Civil War ‘chasseur style’ kepis are quite popular. This example will make an excellent addition to any military headgear collection!
