Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is an absolutely stunning example of a scarce 1830s “Knight’s Head” Pommel Officer’s sword with a gorgeous wire-wrapped mother of pearl grip and a brass chain handguard. This example was manufactured by the famed Ames Manufacturing Company out of Cabotville, Chicopee, Massachusetts. This example has a lovely etched blade and comes complete with its ornate brass scabbard.
This Ames militia officer’s sword is in near excellent condition, with a full length 31¼” blade showing nice edge and point, smooth bright metal, with vivid etching on a bright frosted ground and Ames dry needle etched blade address: Ames Mfg Co. Cabotville Mass. The blade is etched with an American Eagle & motto, vinery and plants. The etching is very clear and has been well-preserved within its scabbard for nearly 2 centuries. The blade even retains the leather blade buffer.
The pommel is in the form of a high-crested visored and plumed Greco-Roman helmet with double-chain knuckleguard connecting to the end of one of the curved ends of the crossguard. The grip is a lovely brass wire-wrapped mother of pearl finish which is well-retained with a small bit of oxidation. The grips have minor chipping and cracking from age but have a lovely patina. The chape is well-designed with the American Eagle & shield motif.
The included brass scabbard has a lovely ornate finish at the suspension rings, with just some denting and oxidation from age.
This is a truly stunning example of a scarce & ornate officer’s sword from a niche era in American history. Comes ready for further research and display.
