Original U.S. NASA Collection of Six Scale Models of Spacecrafts on Bases & Signed Photograph of James Lovell of Apollo 13

Regular price $2,695.00

Item Description

Original Items. Only One Group Available. This is a great collection of six scale models of NASA Spacecrafts complete on display bases with a signed photograph of James Lovell, command module pilot of Apollo 8 and commander of Apollo 13.

The models include:
- Pioneer Venus Multiprobe - Launched in 1978 to explore Venus as part of NASA's Pioneer program. This part of the mission included a spacecraft bus which was launched from Earth carrying one large and three smaller probes, which after separating penetrated the Venusian atmosphere at a different location, returning data as they descended into the planet's thick atmosphere. The entry occurred on December 9, 1978. The model measures 5 x 7 x 8½” with the model suspended by a rod that gives the impression of floating. Dated 1978 by HUGHES.
- Pioneer Venus Orbiter - Launched in May 1978 atop an Atlas-Centaur rocket, the spacecraft was inserted into an elliptical orbit around Venus on December 4, 1978. It returned data from Venus until October 1992. The model measures 8 x 6½ x 5” and is a great example, but it may be missing some parts. Some paint is chipping from the base. Dated 1978 by HUGHES.
- HS 376 - The Boeing 376 (sometimes referred to as the BSS-376, and previously as the HS-376) is a communications satellite bus introduced in 1978 by Hughes Space and Communications Company. It was a spin-stabilized bus, a successor to Hughes HS-333. The model measures 4½ x 6 x 7½”. By HUGHES.
- Intelsat IV - Intelsat IV F-4 was a geostationary communication satellite built by Hughes, it was owned by Intelsat. The satellite was based on the HS-312 platform and its estimated useful life was 7 years. The Intelsat IV F-4 was part of the Intelsat IV series which consisted of eight communications satellites, launched from Cape Canaveral during the early 1970s, marked the fifth generation of geostationary communications satellites developed by the Hughes Aircraft Company since 1963 with the launch of Syncom II, the world's first synchronous satellite. The Syncom II was 15 cm high and 28 inches in diameter, weighing 78 Lbs in orbit. In contrast, the Intelsat IVs weighed more than 1,300Lbs (595 kg) into orbit and were more than 17 feet (5.2 meters) in diameter. All seven satellites exceeded their projected life expectancies and were withdrawn from active duty, the last of which, the Intelsat IV F-1 was retired in October 1987. The model measures 4½ x 6 x 6¼” and is dated 1971 by HUGHES.
- GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) - The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), operated by the United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service division, supports weather forecasting, severe storm tracking, and meteorology research. Spacecraft and ground-based elements of the system work together to provide a continuous stream of environmental data. The National Weather Service (NWS) and the Meteorological Service of Canada use the GOES system for their North American weather monitoring and forecasting operations, and scientific researchers use the data to better understand land, atmosphere, ocean, and climate dynamics. The model measures 4½ x 6 x 9” and is in fair shape. It’s dated 1980 by HUGHES.
- Global Positioning System Satellite NAVSTAR - The GPS project was started by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1973. The first prototype spacecraft was launched in 1978 and the full constellation of 24 satellites became operational in 1993. This is a great smaller model measuring 3 x 3 x 4½”. It is 1/50th the scale of the actual satellite.

The models are all in fair condition and display very well together.

The included photograph of James Lovell measures 8 x 10” and reads To Dick Wescott - With much appreciation - James Lovell Apollo 13.

This is a really great collection of NASA models and a signed photograph of one of the greatest astronauts of all time. Comes ready for further research and display.
