Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Condition 16” WWI M1905 Springfield rifle bayonet by the Springfield Armory, complete with an original M3 Scabbard, indicating possible WWII reissue. It is dated 1906, the first year of production, being made during the pre-WWI period for the M1903 Springfield rifle. It is still in the original issued configuration, having never been blued during World War I, with wooden grip scales. The M1905 was originally designed with a bright steel blade, but upon U.S. entry into WWI in 1917, the specification was changed to a fully blued bayonet, and bright bayonets on hand were blued to match, like this one. Many of these were reissued for use in WWII, and were parkerized and even cut down, but this one was not.

The blade ricasso is marked with SA for the Springfield Armory in Springfield Mass, the primary center for the manufacture of United States military firearms from 1777 until its closing in 1968. Below this is the Ordnance flaming bomb and date of manufacture 1906.

The other side of the ricasso is marked with U.S. above serial number 151231. The blade is in very good condition, with a very nice finish, and unfortunately has a few nicks in the blade with some spots of light oxidation. The handle is a nice aged blue, while the cross guard has some surface rust. The original wooden grip scales are in good condition, with much of the original ribbed texture and does have some minor cracking present, but no major loss of wood.

The original M3 scabbard is marked U.S. on the steel throat over the "Flaming Bomb", and is in good condition. The B N marking on the underside of the metal throat lip indicates manufacture by Beckwith Manufacturing, who produced a variety of thermoplastic impregnated cotton fabric scabbards during the war. The N is for New England Pressed Steel, who made the steel throats under contract with Beckwith. The throat of the scabbard is missing most of the original finish, with a bit of past oxidation showing. The scabbard body has no major damage, but the paint does show wear along the edge.

A good example of the 16” WWI M1905 Springfield rifle bayonet by SA, complete with scabbard! Ready to display or fit on your Springfield 1903 Rifle.
