Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. On March 1st, 1867, Nebraska was officially recognized as the 37th State of the United States of America. That year, on July 4th, the 37 Star Flag was officially adopted as the national flag of the US. This flag remained in use for a period of 10 years until between July 4th 1867 and July 4th 1877, when Colorado joined the union, leading to the introduction of the 38 Star Flag.
The 37-star flags are a rare and desirable flag due to their limited production time and age. This particular United States National Flag measures an impressive 5 x 8 Feet in size and features a canvas header, making it a fitting display piece for any collection.
The only marking on the header is 5 x 8 for the size, 5 by 8 feet. The header has two brass grommets at the ends. The flag body is composed of a multi-piece cotton canvas construction, with the stars intricately sewn onto the canton. The stars are all hand-sewn and hand-cut, with one row of 7 stars and the top and five rows of 6 stars below, not a very gracious placement but it certainly works! This flag has survived extremely well for its age, with only a few small tears along the edge and some small holes and staining on the flag.
From the flag’s construction, we assume it to be from roughly 1870, but it could be a bit earlier as well. This is one of the best early flags we have offered, and the very first 37-star example we’ve had.
A very nice example, ready for further research and display!
