Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous example of a Spanish-American War used M1883 sack coat, named on the interior to Private Joseph A. Greer, from Colombia, Pennsylvania. Greer was part of Company A, 4th Pennsylvania Infantry, which saw combat in Puerto Rico during the war. Finding any SAW uniforms are difficult, but to find one that is not only identified but that saw combat in Puerto Rico is very rare!
Joseph A. Greer enlisted in Company A of the 4th Pennsylvania Infantry on May 8th, 1898. He was mustered in on May 10th, 1898, and shipped to Puerto Rico in August. While in Puerto Rico, Greer saw combat in the towns of Arroyo & Guyama, Puerto Rico. While overseas, Greer captured a Spanish uniform button which he used to replace the bottom button of his sack coat. This was a fantastic personal touch to an already-phenomenal uniform. Greer returned home on September 6th, 1898 and took part in the Peace Jubilee in Philadelphia. He was mustered out on November 16th, 1898.
The coat is named via a small tag on the interior which identifies Greer. The sack coat is in great shape overall, with all buttons retained including the Spanish button worn at the bottom. There is scattered mothing across the uniform but thankfully due to the dark color, it is very difficult to see! This is a phenomenal identified Spanish American War Sack coat, ready for further research and display!
