Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous example of an experimental canteen from the Spanish-American War era. The canteen is much thinner than the standard M1878 that had been used up to that point. The cover is also khaki but there are three snaps on the back which keep the cover applied, a very interesting and unique bit of its construction. The snaps are rather oxidized so we would recommend not trying to remove them as they may rip out of the fabric.
The canteen is unit marked on the front:
2
MSG
3
MG
This is likely for a state guard unit, likely Massachusetts as we have found other items marked M.S.G. for that unit. The MG indicates the Machine Gun company, in this case the 3rd. The canteen retains its cork and has a Rock Island Arsenal 1904 Dated Hanger attached, but this was likely added later.
A very unique experimental canteen from the Span Am period, ready for further research and display.
