Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very nifty hand-made toy tank made from a Walter Baker & Co. Chocolate crate. The tank is very crudely designed and is missing a couple pieces, but is certainly of the period and shows some great ingenuity.

On the interior sides of the treads, the maker’s information of the crate can be found:

WALTER BAKER & CO.

DORCHESTER, MASS.

The Baker Chocolate Company was an American company that produced chocolate, headquartered in Dorchester, Boston. It was the first company to produce chocolate in the country. Following the deaths of its founders and officers, the company was sold to the Forbes Syndicate in 1896, which carried on the business until it was sold to Postum Cereal in 1927.

The tank is modeled after a Female Mark V British Landship based on its use of machine guns on both sides rather than a QF Pounder cannon. The treads are hand-carved into the wood, and the two sides are connected via four dowel rods, with small wood planks covering the center. There is one of these planks absent, on the bottom, so thankfully it isn’t as noticeable. Another of the planks on the bottom is loose, but again if it remains stationary, it isn’t very noticeable.

The tank measures roughly 17½ x 12 x 6” including the turrets. A great period handmade toy from materials that were available, with a great patina. Comes ready for further research and display!
