Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous smoking board kit likely put together by a U.S. Veteran of World War I using pieces he brought back from France. The board includes a match striker, a small shell meant to hold matches, an ashtray with two slots to hold pipes or cigars, and a stand with four slots for pipes and a large artillery shell reservoir likely meant for storing tobacco. This is a very unique set, the first of its kind we have seen.
The set measures 15 x 5¾ x 5¼”. The artillery shells are removable, with two of them having no base and the third being from a French 75mm shell dated 1917. The match striker is very worn down, meaning this set definitely saw heavy usage by the veteran who put it together. The set comes with one smoking pipe which is marked on the side:
STARFIRE
DR. GRABOW
The pipe is in fair shape and shows heavy use. There are three more slots for pipes with the fourth being an odd shape. This set would look complete with the rest of the pipes, and could still be used today, with all parts working as intended. We have not tested the striker with a new match, but we are confident it would still work.
This is a very interesting and gorgeous trench art set that could still be used to smoke today. A really great conversation piece, ready for further research and display.
