During WWI, some slight modifications were made to the canteen cover, the color changed slightly to a more drab appearance and, perhaps most notably, the eagle snap fasteners were changed to lift-the-dot fasteners. In addition, a mounted version of the cover was introduced with a russet leather strap secured by loops on the side and bottom of the cover that was attached to the saddle by a spring clip at the top.

In 1941 the mounted canteen cover was changed. On the rear of the cover there was a long web loop tab with a pattern 1910 double belt hook at the top. The tab was reinforced by a vertical web strap stitched at the top and bottom. The double belt hooks could be used to attach the cover directly to the cartridge or pistol belt, or it could be attached to a web strap fitted with a spring clip that in turn attached to the saddle. This attachment is the M-1941 extender strap and is still attached to the pouch.

The canteen cover is in wonderful condition and is dated 1942 on the reverse right side. The manufacturer marking is above the date and reads as Foley MFG. Co with a date of 1942. There is light staining and use present but is otherwise presented without any extensive damage and is one of the nicest we have seen recently.

The canteen itself is marked A.P. CO 1942, and the cup is marked L.F.&C. 1941, making this a certainly matching set all with similar dates of manufacture. The cap of the canteen is still intact and the chain is still perfect and attached. 

The canteen cover comes with a wonderful canteen and canteen cup, both offered without any damage aside from wear. This is a great set that comes ready for further research and display.
