Item Description
Original Grouping. One-of-a-Kind. This is the tremendous uniform grouping of Lieutenant Leone Adams, who spent over two years overseas during World War II with the Army Nurse Corps. During the war, Adams was in charge of the neuro-surgical ward at a General Hospital in England, helping soldiers who suffered nerve injuries on the battlefield regain use of their limbs. The grouping includes Adams’ British-made uniform, overseas cap, hobby hat, and a very scarce ANC purse with its original contents.
The grouping includes:
- Adams’ British-made “Ike Jacket”, with a patch for the Headquarters, European Theater of Operations, United States Army, Communications Zone, and a rocker for the OISE Intermediate Section. The left cuff bears a staggering five overseas stripes, for 2 and a half years overseas. There are US & Medical Nurse collar insignia, and 1st Lieutenant insignia on the shoulders. The buttons are fabric-covered, which is indicative of British-made Ike jackets. The nametag LT. LEONE ADAMS is stitched under the collar.
- Adams’ Overseas cap with a 1st Lieutenant insignia and black & gold piping denoting officer. It is Size 22 and has a name tag sewn in for LEONE ADAMS.
- Adams’ scarce uniform pants, stamped on the interior with LEONE ADAMS, A.N.C. N-722-236. The pants are in great shape.
- Adams’ uniform skirt, with button retained and no tags or markings on the interior.
- Officer’s “Hobby Hat” with the correct US insignia and cloth chinstrap, marked Size 22 1/2 and named via a stamp to Margaret Vancer, A-310326. This hat may have been reissued, or it was added to the group later. Still, it is a very scarce cap on its own and complements the group well. A great opportunity for research!
- Adams’ incredibly scarce ANC Purse, with the original contents including a set of her gloves, a sewn-in coin purse with a US collar insignia on the front, a pouch containing dozens of bobby pins and other small bits, and several small stumps from train tickets. There’s also a small pocket mirror from the WWI period inside.
Leone Adams was born on December 13th, 1902 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. She first enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps on August 2nd, 1943, serving overseas from April 20th, 1944 until July 21st, 1947, a very long time in the service. She was finally discharged on July 21st, 1947 at the Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. From her obituary, she apparently retired as the rank of Colonel. We can’t find much on her life after the service, but he passed away on May 30th, 1988 at the age of 85. A great research project!
This is a phenomenal grouping with a solid identification, and tons of potential for further research! Comes ready for further research and display!
