Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an absolutely tremendous piece of POW-made trench art, a Tank Calendar with pieces that rotate to change the year, month, day, and weekday, made in 1945 by a German Prisoner of War at Camp Washington in Washington, Illinois. POW Trench art has always been very desirable, and this is a stellar example.

The black-painted wood & brass tank sits on a wood base measuring 7½ x 12¾”. At the front of the base is a plaque bearing Camp Washington. The tank itself has a wood body with brass caterpillar tracks. The very top piece of the tank rotates to change the year displayed directly below it, with 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1950. 1945 is worn down and only 45 is visible, but the rest of the years look great. The gun barrel can be lifted up and pushed down to cycle through the calendar year, with a slot on the left displaying the days, 1-31, and the right slot displaying the month abbreviation, and pushing down when it’s at 31 will change the month. The barrel is very delicate, so please use caution when handling it. A small wheel on the right side of the tank allows the cycling of the day of the week.

The tank itself measures roughly 9½ x 5½ x 5”. The paint is all still retained and the tank is overall in near perfect condition with just a few scuffs and nicks from storage over the years.

This is an absolutely phenomenal piece of trench art, one of the coolest we have ever offered, and being German POW made makes it even cooler. It’s ready for further research and display.
