Original Item. Only One Available. This is a WWII Purple Heart Medal shipped to William Stocksdale, who participated in the Invasion on D-Day. Stocksdale was wounded during the D-Day Invasion as is evident by his obituary. The medal comes in its original case and shipping box which is still addressed to Stocksdale.

The medal’s case is in rough condition with a white paper material pasted to the front. The case contains the Purple Heart Medal, Numbered #385858, with its original ribbon, spare piece of ribbon for the brooch, and the small pin. The interior of the case is in good shape. The medal itself is not engraved. The original shipping box is postmarked September 10th, 1946. It is sent from the War Department, Philadelphia QM Depot. On the box is written NO. 385858, and it is sent to Mr. William E. Stocksdale, Route #1, New Philadelphia, Ohio. The shipping box measures 7¼ x 4¼ x 1½”.

William Eldred "Bill" Stocksdale was born in his family home at New Philadelphia, August 11, 1919, he was a son of the late William and Ida Beehler Stocksdale. Bill was a 1937 graduate of New Philadelphia High School who proudly served in the European Theatre as a Corporal during World War II. He was one of the many American soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy, France in June, 1944, Bill's participation coming the day after the massive invasion known as D-Day. Bill was injured during the landing and earned a Purple Heart for injuries he sustained that day. Once back in the Tuscarawas Valley, Bill never forgot about his comrades in the armed services. For more than sixty years, he participated in the Military Funeral Detail of the New Philadelphia Veteran's of Foreign Wars, an organization in which he served as commander from 1974 to 1976 and held life membership. Bill was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and served as commander of the former local chapter. For most of his life, Bill worked as a truck driver with the former Breyer Trucking. Stocksdale passed away on March 23rd, 2011 at the age of 91.
