Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely example of a Victorian Era Indian Cavalry Saber from the Princely State of Bharatpur. At this time, India was under British Rule, as it had been since 1858 after the Crown took over administration from the East India Company following the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The individual states, many of which had formerly been kingdoms, did retain some level of autonomy, which included having their own military forces. These of course would have the various types of units seen worldwide, including infantry, and of course Cavalry, who usually had the most stylish swords.

This sword dates from approximately 1890, during the long reign of Jaswant Singh of Bharatpur, who was the 11th Maharaja of Bharatpur, reining from 1853 (when he was just 2) to 1893. It is a somewhat typical European style cavalry saber, with a 34" slightly curved fullered blade, which actually has a drop / clip point tip, something we do not usually see. It has a large solid steel handguard, which bears an attached brass State Arms of Bharatpur badge, showing the coat of arms and the motto at the bottom in Indian writing, which we have not been able to decipher. Inside the guard is a lovely leather wrapped wooden grip, which is bound with twisted copper wires. Condition is very good, with the blade showing light use, and there is a lovely lightly oxidized patina on the guard.

The saber is stamped with T. K. ON. 1 on the spine of the blade, which we assume is a regimental marking of some sort. Aside from the coat of arms and this, there are no other markings or identification on the sword and scabbard.

The included scabbard is bright steel, which shows staining and oxidation on the exterior shell. It is fitted with nickel silver on the drag, the throat, and both hanger rings and bolsters are made from this alloy as well. It presents very nicely, and fits the saber well.

A very interesting late Victorian Era Indian Cavalry Saber, ready to research and display!
