Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good condition Genuine WWI Austro-Hungarian Model 1918 “Hungarian” helmet with an original standard Olive Green / Brown "Isonzo braun" paint. The paint is well retained, something we do not often see, as many of these helmets were repainted during the war or after. Although the helmet retains all three liner pads, two of them are partially detached, and they are partially deteriorated as well. It also has an extremely rare variation of chinstrap configuration, using a small tightening buckle rather than having different holes for adjustment. All three liner split pins are intact, with the correct thicker pin in the rear.
This M1918 “Hungarian” helmet is almost identical to the M1917 Austro-Hungarian helmet, with the primary difference being the chinstrap being somewhat integrated into the liner. They are not directly connected, but they are both affixed by the same two side liner pins.
The rear of the helmet skirt is marked with a "Bear" logo over 64, indicating manufacture by Berndorfer Metal-Warenfabrik A Krupp AG in Berndorf, Austria in size 64. This is the only factory that manufactured the M18 "Hungarian" model helmets. Size 64 is a nice medium size that would usually accommodate size 56 to 58 hat sizes, which is 7 to 7 1/4 in U.S. sizes. This is somewhat hard to see due to paint, however this was the ONLY company to make these helmets during the war.
The proper name of this model is the “Stahlhelme deutschen Krupp-Mod.“ Nicknamed “Hungarian” or also known as 1918 model, manufactured from November 1917, German Stahlhelm shaped with two ventilation lugs, only made in size 64, with a taller external back rivet ( 4 m.m. instead of the usual 3 m.m. found on other maker’s production) with internal trapezoidal terminal edges often covered by paint. Austrian army orders were for 180.000 pieces between March and June 1918 but there isn't at the moment information on actual deliveries. Characteristic of this manufacturer is the fact that he also produced all the accessories required to complete the helmets he made ( complete chin straps and liners).
The shell also retains both of the extended ventilation side lugs, which are the correct long version with a step for the smaller size 64 shell. This would ensure proper installation of a "Stirnpanzer" brow plate regardless of shell size. We checked the top of the helmet for a rolling mill mark, but due to wear and oxidation, there are no visible markings on the interior or exterior crown (These helmets were known to have rolling mill markings on both the interior and exterior).
This is a great chance to pick up a very nice Austro-Hungarian "Great War" helmet, still in the original issued configuration. Ready to add to your WWI collection!
The Central Powers of Austria-Hungary used, manufactured and commissioned, variations of the World War One German Stahlhelm M16 design. The Austrian M1917 helmet was similar to the German M1916, but had a few variations including the chinstrap,, chinstrap rivets located higher up on the steel shell and variations in locations of markings among others.
Early Austrian helmets were supplied by Germany, the first shells supplied as the chinstrap rivets were mounted in a lower position. The Austrians fitted their own chinstrap bales, chinstraps and liner and painted them in Austrian Isonzo braun. These modifications were carried out with German machinery at the"Adolf Westen di Cilli factory, which is now Celije, in Slovenia.
