Original WWII Hungarian Military Police Tábori Biztonság Gorget with Chain - Period Repaired

Regular price $795.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Gorgets hold an interesting place in history, as they are a throw-back to the days of medieval knights, when suits of armor included a neck protection device called a Gorget. They have been used since then to identify membership or function in various military and law enforcement organizations, and Gorgets were thoroughly used throughout the Third Reich. During WWII, Hungary was on the side of the Axis powers, and also issued gorgets for certain positions as Germany had.

This is a nice patinated example of a rare WWII Hungarian Military Police gorget, which were issued during the last days of WWII. It is made of relatively heavy alloy, possibly pewter or zinc, though it may just be thick aluminum alloy. The front features a detailed Hungarian Coat of arms flanked by oak leaf sprigs. Below this emblem is a banner reading TÁBORI BIZTONSÁG, meaning literally “field security” or “camp security,” denoting military police. These are both riveted to the main body of the gorget, which measures 6 1/4" x 4".

As made, these had three flat hooks on the back that would have a steel chain attached, very similar to the German Third Reich era gorgets. This allowed the gorget to be worn several different ways. This example however had all three of these flat hooks removed, and then new brass plated steel hooks installed on the top right and left. These have a non-magnetic chain installed, which is also a replacement, as it does not match the typical style used on these Hungarian gorgets, which was very similar to the German style. These were usually issued without any type of backing cloth, but some green leather was attached on the back to cover the rivets for the hooks. There is also the serial number 15649 deeply stamped into the back, as well as remnants of an adhesive label.

This example definitely looks to have seen long service, and has a lovely patina, with some very interesting period repairs. These are exceedingly hard to find in any condition, and this is the only example that we have been able to offer. Ready to research and display!
