Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous British Officer’s saber carried & used by an Officer of the 90th Regiment of Foot during the Egyptian Campaign. The 90th saw action at the Battle of Abukir on 8 March 1801 and the Battle of Mandora on 13 March 1801. The sword is affixed with an Egyptian Sphinx insignia on the pommel below a 90 for the regiment, with the regimental badge of the 90th affixed to each rain chape. The spine of the sword is marked WOOLLEY & CO, a well-known maker of swords during the late 18th century & early 19th century.
The sword is well-retained within its original leather & brass scabbard. The leather of the scabbard is weak and the stitching is mostly gone, but it is still well-retained, with the brass fittings still mostly tight on the leather. Swords of this era are almost never found with their original scabbards, as they were generally weaker and did not survive. The sword even retains its original leather blade buffer.
The 31” curved blade appears to have been polished & sharpened several times over the years to remove oxidation, and is now very sharp because of it. The hilt retains its leather wrap, with some small areas of loss. The brass of the hilt appears to have been polished long ago as well. There may have been a name engraved above the 90 on the spine of the hilt, but it is now too worn to read, although the first word may be Capt.. A great research project!
This is a tremendous saber attributed to an officer of the 90th Regiment of Foot, seeing combat in the Egyptian Campaign of 1801. This would make a fine addition to any sword collection. Comes ready for further research and display.
