This is a lovely sword with a storied history that spans two centuries, with a blade produced in the 18th Century bearing the “Spanish Motto” NO ME SAQUES SIN RAZON, NO ME ENBAINES SIN HONOR, which translates to Draw Me Not Without Reason, Sheath Me Not Without Honour. These blades were manufactured in Spain and would reach the furthest ends of the Spanish Colonial Empire, many examples being imported to Mexico, which remained a Spanish colony until its independence in 1821. The hilt of this sword dates to Mexico pre-independence, roughly the 1800-1821 period.

From our research, we’ve found that the blade with 'Spanish motto' does appear to be of the numbers of these which came into the Spanish colonial sphere from late 18th century into the early 19th century, this one seems to be one of the earlier ones which are believed to have been produced in Toledo. The style of the lettering seems to correspond to those. Typically these blades were mounted in three bar cavalry hilts, as illustrated in the cavalry saber c.1820s. This example has a more ceremonial style hilt with a polished ray skin grip covered mostly by embossed sheet silver.

The blade of this sword measures 32½” with an overall length of 38½”. Both sides of the blade are engraved NO ME SAQUES SIN RAZON, NO ME ENBAINES SIN HONOR, which translates to Draw Me Not Without Reason, Sheath Me Not Without Honour. It could also translate to Do Not Draw Me Without Reason, Do not Sheath me without Honour.

This is a phenomenal sword engraved with a phrase that echoes the strength of once-powerful Spanish Empire, which ruled over 13 Million Square Kilometers of the planet at its height, and the Independence of Mexico, which took place over a period of eleven years and led to the deaths of between 250,000 and 500,000 people.
