Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice single shot percussion overcoat pistol, made circa 1860 for the U.S. Market, which had become enthusiastic about target shooting during the latter half of the 19th Century. This example does not have a maker marking, however we believe it was made by Ethan Allen of Massachusetts (1808-1871), who during the 1860s was partnered with his brother-in-law Thomas Wheelock. We have seen other examples from this period, and it definitely looks correct. We did notice that it has a CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V Birmingham "viewed" proof on the left side of the frame, but no other markings, suggesting that it was imported to England at some point. All imported guns needed to be "viewed" at the proof houses before sale. Definitely some great research potential in this lovely pistol.

Our offered example measures approximately 13 inches long with a heavy part octagonal 8 inch barrel. It is definitely quite front heavy, which is why we can only really see it as being a target pistol. It would not fit easily into any pocket, and the high weight would make it very resistant to any type of recoil. The bore measures out to about .38", and it has six groove rifling that is in really great shape. It does not look to have been used much at all, maybe purchased more of a curiosity than anything else.

The pistol really is quite impressive looking, with the very long heavy barrel and retrofitted ramrod underneath. It shows a lovely plum patina on the barrel, while the frame shows a faded blue finish. It shows some lovely foliate engraving on the sides of the lock work, and on the hammer. The bag shaped walnut grip is very finely checkered, and has an escutcheon on the back of the grip. The trigger is protected by a lovely engraved trigger guard. The lock is functional, however it does not appear to have any provision for a half cock position on the tumbler.

A very interesting single shot pistol from the mid 19th century, attributed to Allen & Wheelock. Ready to research and display!
