Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Probably dating to 1760-1800, this is very interesting rifled musket from the Caucasus region, which looks to be of Cossack origin. It is fitted with a MIQUELET lock and features a "ball" trigger and lovely bone butt cap. It measures a substantial 54 inches in overall length, with a 42 inch long 0.53" caliber octagonal barrel, which has heavy 8 groove RIFLING on the interior, something we do not usually see at this period. It's possible that the barrel was imported from elsewhere, and as with many pistols and muskets of the period from this area, parts were often reused from other guns.
In overall form the musket is definitely somewhat spartan, with a long unadorned wooden stock, with the only decoration being the lovely matured bone butt cap. The barrel is held to the stock by sheet brass bands, however we can also see old slots for barrel wedges, which are no longer present. The miquelet lock is lovely, and actually does function, however the pivot pin for the ball trigger is loose, so it is not able to pull the internal spring back far enough for the half cock to release. There is what looks to be a ramrod at the muzzle, but as far as we can tell it is just for display, and have not been able to remove it.
A very interesting Cossack Miquelet rifled musket, ready to add to your collection and display!

History of the Miquelet Lock:
Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English-speaking world, for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets
and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid 19th centuries.
The term miquelet lock was not recorded until the 19th century, long after the appearance of the mechanism in the 16th century, and is of uncertain origin. One commonly held view is that it was coined by British troops in the Peninsular War to describe the style of musket used by the Miquelet (militia) that had been assigned to the Peninsular Army of the Duke of Wellington.
