Item Description
Original Item: Only One available. This is an interesting honest used example of the classic Springfield trapdoor rifle, the weapon used, in its carbine form, by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:
U.S.
MODEL
1873
Offered in very good condition is this trapdoor rifle in .45-70 government caliber, with Serial #308040 stamped on the rear of the receiver, which indicates production in approximately January 1886, per U.S. Government records. This is a bit late for a model 1873, as the Model 1884 was already well into production, which may indicate it was serviced at arsenal before being dispersed to state militia units. It is also possible that it was simply made with left over parts, but we suspect the former explanation is more correct.
The improved Buffington rear sight was removed, replaced with a Model 1879 rear sight. It was also fitted with a Model 1873 breech block, which was identical to the Model 1884 save for markings. It still does have the M1884 serrated rear trigger, however the cleaning rod is actually an early 2nd Pattern m1874 type which features a cup on the front and a serrated jag on the end. This would later be replaced by a smooth tipped version in 1878. There is still an inspection cartouche on the left side of the stock, however it is too worn to read.
The rifle shows an overall very good metal finish, with all the metal proofs still present. There is some past peppering in areas, and overall there is an aged patina overall, with the barrel faded a bit towards plum. The stock is in very good condition, and is not fully 'proud' over the level of the lock plate, so it definitely has has some wood removed by cleaning over the years. It shows the lovely bright red-brown color of aged and oiled walnut, and the expected dents and dings from long service. There is no major damage we can see, such as cracks or gouges, and it has the look of a nice honest used stock that was in service for decades.
The bore is in very good condition, with a somewhat bright finish and still-visible lands and grooves. There is overall wear, and some spots of fouling and oxidation, but no major pit rust. Would rate this a 6-7 out of 10. The breech block opens correctly, and locks back closed, though it does take a bit of force to get the lock to engage. The ejector is present, however it does not have the latch to "snap back" at present. The model 1879 rear sight works well, with no issues to note, and has a great finish.
The butt plate is marked U.S. and both barrel bands are U marked. The metal finish is just lovely, showing a lovely aged patina, having been well cared for over the years. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., two bands, two sling swivels with stacking swivel, standard model 1879 sliding sight, and standard ramrod. Lock is marked with a Federal Eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD, indicating that it was manufactured at the United States Armory and Arsenal at Springfield, in Springfield, Massachusetts. The cleaning rod shows light wear, and still retains the ribbed cleaning jag on the narrow end.
Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel: a capital A on top; a V over a P over an eagle's head over another P on the left side just above the stock.
This is an great opportunity to pick up a very nice example of a classic U.S. issue firearm, in very nice honest used condition. Ready to display!
