Item Description
Original Items. Only One Set Available. This is a lovely set of Civil War plates, the first being a gorgeous M1851 Federal Eagle Enlisted man & Non-Commissioned Officer’s belt plate set with silver wreath indicating wear by EM & NCOs, and a circular federal eagle cartridge box plate with both of its loops retained. These came with a small label reading WILDERNESS 1962, which would indicate that these were found together in 1962 at the site of the Battle of the Wilderness, but as they don’t appear ground dug, they may have been found well-preserved somewhere in the area.
The regulation 1851 pattern, brass, eagle waist belt plate is the rectangular, concave, detailed plate that measures approximately 83 mm long x 53 mm high, the cast brass plate has an integral tongue on the reverse and the one-piece, nickel-silver wreath terminating beneath the eagle’s wings. The wreath remains strongly secured to the front face. The plate face has an even patina and exhibits well-defined edges. All the brass hardware retains a nice, aged patina.
The Federal box plate is in similar shape with a great worn patina, with the loops on the back appearing heavily oxidized.
The overall condition of both plates are great, they are getting very difficult to find in this condition. These would be a welcome addition to any Civil War collection. Ready to display!
