Original U.S. War of 1812 Period Mounted Dragoon Belly Cartridge Box with Tin Flute Dividers & Later-Added Gilt Button Knob

Regular price $495.00

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a gorgeous and unique example of a War of 1812 Period Mounted Dragoon belly box, in fantastic condition and still retaining its original securing strap, as well as the original tin flute dividers inside, with 12 slots for paper cartridges.

The box measures 8½ x 3½ x 1”, and retains both of its original leather belt loops, although one of them is coming close to breaking. The leather of the box has aged correctly for the period, with a gorgeous patina overall. The tin dividers are in great condition and have retained their connections well.

This box has a very intriguing and somewhat confusing repair, the original bottom knob which the securing strap would attach to broke off, and was replaced with what appears to be a gilt Federal eagle button of the Pre-WWI period, but the face of the button is extremely worn, with the details of the eagle nearly gone. Furthermore, the buttons looks entirely integrated into the box, with no looseness or play. We can only assume that this was a family heirloom, passed down through generations, possibly being repaired by a descendent during the Pre-WWI era. It is entirely done in the period, and is not a later addition, making this a very interesting piece.

The belly box came out of a museum in Pennsylvania, and was in its collection for 60+ years. A great War of 1812 Dragoon belly box with a fantastic and interesting history, ready for further research and display.
