Item Description

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind. This is an extremely scarce pair of Marine Corps Field Gear items attributed to Lloyd Nesbitt Coleman, who served in the Marine Corps from July 26th, 1900, until July 26th, 1905. The set is named to Coleman via a note that was in the holster reading L. COLEMAN USMC.

This group includes:
- First Pattern Colt Model 1905 Marine Corps Revolver Holster. Now THESE are EXTREMELY rare! This is a very nice leather flap holster for the Colt Model 1905 Marine Corps .38cal revolver. This was a variation of the Colt M1892 with a rounded grip frame, only issued by the United States Marine Corps during the period from 1905 to 1909. Only a very small number (less than 850) are known to have been issued under military contract. Less than 1000 of these holsters were EVER made! The survival rate of the holsters is very low, and we have only ever seen a few! That’s on top of it being attributed to a Marine. This example is of the First pattern made, with the male snap on the top flap. It has the correct brass snaps with the proper iron rivets in the back retaining the belt loop. Condition is good, though it was finished black at some point, probably post manufacture. It still has a clear USMC inside an oval on the top flap. Some of the stitching is loose but otherwise a great example.

- Great Pattern 1894 .38 Caliber Mills Cartridge Belt. Number 24 is painted on the interior side. Endpiece has patent information for Mills & Orndorff up to 1894. Belt does not have a buckle which from what we can find, was the way they were meant to be worn, attaching via a C-shaped bar like this one. A very interesting and scarce belt. The belt is “mounted to a board with thin wire which reads MARINE CORPS PISTOL BELT but this will not work well to display it long-term.

Lloyd Nesbitt Coleman was born on March 3rd, 1877 in Ohio, and enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 26th, 1900. During his time in the Marines, Coleman served in Panama, aboard the USS Iowa (BB-4) from 1901-1903, and at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904 as part of the Naval Exhibit. He served until the expiration of his enlistment on July 26th, 1905, as a Corporal, Character Excellent.

This is a tremendous set of Marine Corps field gear, attributed to a Marine serving from 1900-1905. Comes ready for further research and display!
