Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a gorgeous example of one of the scarcest WWI aviation helmets, the British No. 2 Aviator’s Safety Helmet. This example was manufactured by Christys in London in Size 7, complete with the original goggles.

The helmet is in fair shape with some stitching having come undone on the crown in several spots. The four mesh ventilation holes are intact. The ear flaps both retain their wheel-shaped vents, allowing for protection and warmth of the ears without sacrificing hearing. The leather liner is retained but cracking & crazing. There is a Size Stamp 7 on the liner. The chinstrap which is connected to the ear flaps is intact. The interior crown of the helmet has a maker’s tag reading:

NO. 2
PATENT NO. 17855
TRADEMARK CHRISTYS LONDON
AVIATORS
SAFETY HELMET

There is a faint broad arrow stamp under the liner.

The goggles, which are in fair service-used condition, are named on the strap to LEONARD J. FARLEY, who we believe to be Leonard Joseph Farley of the Royal Flying Corps. We can’t find much on his service but we found record of his Royal Air Force Commission on the Smithsonian website. Definitely a great research project! The goggles are missing much of the leather on the front, and show true combat-use.

This is a fantastic set with an extremely scarce aviator’s helmet, ready for further research and display.
