Original U.S. WWI Named USS Arkansas Navy Flat Hat with Great “Firth of Forth” Inscription

Regular price $225.00

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous WWI Navy Flat Hat identified to Francis Carlyle Osborn, who served as a Musician 2nd Class aboard the USS Arkansas. The cap bears a lovely cap tally reading USS ARKANSAS

The Arkansas was the second member of the Wyoming class, built by the United States Navy. During World War I, she was part of Battleship Division Nine, which was attached to the British Grand Fleet, but she saw no action during the war. The ship was sent to Britain in July 1918 to relieve the battleship Delaware, which had been assigned to operate with the Grand Fleet in the 6th Battle Squadron since December 1917.

The cap is inscribed on the interior lining:

NOV 25 1918
FIRTH
OF FORTH
OSBORN

In our research, we only found one sailor named Osborn aboard the Arkansas, that being Francis Carlyle Osborn, who enlisted on July 18th, 1917 at a recruiting station in Syracuse, New York. He served aboard the Arkansas from September 12th, 1917 until the end of the war, being discharged on January 23rd, 1919.

This is a great example with tons of character, and a lovely leather sweatband. Comes ready for further research and display.
