Original U.S. WWII Navy Kapok Knapsack Life Preserver

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The “Knapsack” type life jacket was a 1942 design worn around the midsection. Since it did not restrict the neck or shoulders, it was ideal for gun crews and communications men aboard US Naval vessels. The back of this type of jacket has two suspender straps which cross over the shoulders with another two midsection straps. There are also button snaps located on the front so the wearer could secure the front flaps out of the way.

This is a great example of the knapsack variant, with the tag still intact on the interior, although it is too heavily worn to be fully read. We can make out that it is by Kapok, but there isn’t much more than can be read. It is certainly of the period and is in good shape.

Overall condition is very good. Comes ready for further research and display.
