Item Description
Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a fantastic lot of two spear heads and two daggers made in the area of New Guinea & the Admiralty Islands. These are finely made chipped black obsidian dagger blades made from the volcanic glass-like obsidian that is only found in the Maus Province of Papua New Guinea. The blades are then mounted in Parinarium nut paste, made from the fruit of the Parinarium or Putty Nut tree (Atuna racemosa racemosa) that was used as an adhesive, filler, and caulking agent in Melanesia.
The fine handles of the Daggers & spear heads are made from carved wood covered in Parinarium nut paste that hardens when it dries and later gets incised designs and ochre painted.
The spear heads measure 10½” and 10” long, with pieces of bamboo-like spear shafts sticking out of the bottom. The decorative paint is on the bottom parts of the obsidian blades. The blades are still mostly tight to the nut paste.
The two daggers measure 10½” and 8¼” long, with one being shorter with a knob-like handle, possibly meant for a woman. The longer of the two has a smaller pointed handle. All four pieces bear similar ochre markings in the nut paste.
This is a fantastic lot of Admiralty Island spear heads and daggers made from obsidian. These are incredibly difficult to find, especially with their original nut paste handles. They will make for a phenomenal display. These come ready for further research and display!
