Item Description

Original Book: Limited Quantity Available. “British Machine Gun Cartridges, 0.4 - 0.65-inch Calibres, 1870 - ca. 1905” was first published in 1995 by B.A. Temple of Kilcoy, Australia. The books measure 9 ½” x 6” and are all in lovely, unused condition. All books come with dust jackets.

“The first machine gun issued for British service was the Gatling Gun, adopted after trials in 1867 and 1870. It was followed by the Gardner, Nordenfelt and Maxim guns, at various times up to the early 1890's.

All these guns initially used ammunition special to each of them, and different from the standard infantry rifle Boxer cartridge, which was deemed unsuitable for this purpose.
This work describes trials leading to the adoption of the various guns, and the development of each type of cartridge for them. It is the first time such a coverage of the subject has been undertaken; the result should prove of interest to both historians and collectors.”
