Original Item: One Only! A truly magnificent Original Uniform Set of a documented British Royal Flying Corp/Royal Air Force Balloon Observation Officer in the 16th. Balloon Company on the Western Front during World War One. The set comprised of khaki Tunic with Observer's Bullion Badge and Tailor's label marked: ?F.W. FLIGHT, Military Outfitters, Winchester, Aldershot and London." Uniform with tailor's label marked up to: "Lt. C.H. DAVIES RAF". Together with ribbed tan colored Jodhpurs and matching Service Peaked Cap complete with correct RAF Bullion badge. The badge, found in the tunic pocket, is Lieutenant Davies' French "Croix de Guerre" medal dated 1914-1917 together with photocopies from the Squadron Record Book showing such entries as: "Hostile Balloon brought down in flames over Bois De Coukelaere," dated September 28th. 1917. In addition copies of his Service Record showing postings between January 1916 and February 1918. Also included are sheepskin and leather mittens and his outstanding quality sheepskin FUG Boots in a wonderful state of preservation which were needed to combat the extreme cold of extended periods aloft.
This is a marvelous set, not only from WW1 RFC/RAF, but from the legendary BALLOON CORPS. Many Officers and men on both sides paid the ultimate price when these balloons, filled with hydrogen, ignited and were brought down.
In simply remarkable museum grade condition, showing only very slight moth damage on tail of tunic, and complete with the ultra rare Cold Weather accessories; mittens and Fug Boots. Well documented and all original!
