Original 17th Century Indian Mughal Pata Warrior Battle Sword with Wootz Steel Blade & Silver Inlaid Guard

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. These are not only very unusual but also extremely RARE. Known as a Mughal Empire Era "PATA" Sword, these usually date to the 17th Century. They were introduced first in Northern India by the Muslim Iranian "Mughals," who took over most of India in the 1600s. Using original European well tempered blades mostly dating from the 16th century and prior, some blades may very well date from the times of Columbus or even earlier to the late Crusades.

This example has a Maratha Empire Firangi / Khanda Rajput style hilt with a gorgeous 29½” Wootz Steel blade. Wootz steel is a crucible steel characterized by a pattern of bands and high carbon content. These bands are formed by sheets of microscopic carbides within a tempered martensite or pearlite matrix in higher-carbon steel, or by ferrite and pearlite banding in lower-carbon steels. It was a pioneering steel alloy developed in southern India in the mid-1st millennium BC and exported globally.

The blade has gorgeous ornamentation with some beautiful niello work on the guard and ricasso covers. The silver inlaid guard is in good condition with much of the ornamentation still visible and strong. The handle still retains a small bit of the red felt covering. The sword overall measures roughly 37”.

Our example is very old and originates from an old collection, so it is fresh to the market. It shows much use and honest wear from its possible 4-500 years of age.  Very rare and very old. A very nice original Mughal Pata Sword with a lovely Wootz blade, ready to display!
