Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely German Jäger Hunting Rifle, which were very popular hunting pieces during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were very well made, as well as being relatively small and highly accurate. This is definitely a "High Grade" example, with some fantastic appointments, and is marked on the top of the barrel by the maker:
ULRICH ROOS UND SOHN IN STUTTGART
This is a known maker of Jäger Rifles and pistols that operated in the mid 19th century, with many known examples easily found by internet searches. This example is definitely a very typical example of their fine work. The barrel was imported, and the left side has the the E / L G / * in an Oval marking of the Belgian Gunmaking city of Liège in use prior to 1893. The back action lock plate is not marked, and as with other examples of their work features a half-cock safety that rotates in front of the hammer behind the nipple cone bolster. There is lots of engraving on the lock, barrel breech, and all of the fittings, so a very large amount of delicate hand work went into making this rifle.
The rifle features a heavy .52" caliber octagonal "Damascus Steel" barrel measuring 29" and measures 45" overall. It has the characteristic sliding patch box to the right side of butt stock and features all steel quality mounts. It is "half-stocked", and has a lovely checkered wrist and the typical carved German cheek piece. Inside the patch box there is still a spare cap nipple cone in the storage inlet, and also a ribbed loading rammer attachment. This fits onto the ORIGINAL brass mounted wooden ramrod, which has a cap on the inside end over a clearing worm, and the attachment screws over the worm. Really a great setup!
As with many high end German Jäger rifles, this example is fitted with a "set trigger", where depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy. It is fully functional at present, and VERY sensitive. The rear trigger must be set, and then the hammer can be pulled back to full cock, after which a very light touch of the front trigger discharges the lock. The lock does have a half-cock position, and can be operated without the set trigger if desired.
Truly a splendid high end example of a mid 19th century German Jäger rifle by a known maker. Not to be missed!
