Original 19th Century Ethiopian Sword in Scabbard with British P-1796 Blade and Horn Grip - circa 1850

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. These swords with exotic horn grips come from the "Horn of Africa," which includes Abyssinia, which we now know as Ethiopia. Made famous just before WWII by the Italian Invasion of that Country, and the appeal by it's Emperor Haile Selassie to the League of Nations, which the Western Powers basically ignored. Its Capital is ADDIS ABABA, a city dating back some 2,000 years and more. A Country much in the news but also a land largely still in the middle ages in some respects.

Our example dating to around 1850 has a 33" slightly curved blade, which is actually from a British P-1796 Light Cavalry Saber! The proof marks are worn away, but there is still a clear 220 rack number stamped onto the spine. The blade has been mounted onto a horn hilt made of exotic material, surmounted with a small decorated brass pommel. The translucent horn today is said to be a great aphrodisiac and is much sought after. The sword comes complete with its original rawhide leather scabbard. A fascinating and very rare African Sword.
