Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. We just received this lovely example along with about 200 other guns, from a collection that sat in an attic for close to 100 years. This is a very nice double barrel hammer shogtun, in a large 10 gauge bore, dating from the 1870's, which is marked:- Marked CAST STEEL BARRELS on the barrel strap.
The gun is in nice shape, and bores are clear, with some oxidation peppering. The shotgun utilizes a side swinging under lever, which allows the barrel to tilt downward for ejection and reloading. It has a checkered wrist on the wood butt stock, while the fore stock is in fact the iron lever that pivots to the right allowing access to the chambers. This reveals the markings of both the "Tower of Liège" proof mark as well as E / L G / * in an oval, indicating manufacture and inspection in Liège, Belgium. There are no serial numbers that we can see. This small country, which only gained indepedence in the early 19th century, had long been a firearms production powerhouse, with Liège being the center of manufacturing.
Both of the back action locks are fitted with very nice "rabbit ear" hammers, and are also Maker signed, however the name is unfortunately illegible. It appears to be "GEO. ??STER", but we have not been able to find any maker that this could be, leaving an excellent research opportunity.
A substantial Double barrel gun intended for the English Speaking Market that no doubt saw extensive service, maybe on the Frontier of the United States, in the later 1870's.
Metal work with now grey steel finish, straight from long time storage and just great for display!
