Original Item: One of a Kind. The Martini-Henry falling block system was arguably one of the most popular designs of the late 19th Century, being the primary weapon of the British Military for almost 20 years. Refit and surplus British rifles continued to serve for decades after the introduction of the Lee-Metford in 1888. However, the British were not the only country to use the system, and the design was adopted by many other countries. They were also made commercially in England, Germany, Belgium, and elsewhere.
This very interesting rifle was acquired in the Arabian country of Oman, a Sultanate on the south east tip of the Arabian Peninsula. The country was a de-facto colony of Great Britain for decades, and as such British-style weapons were sought after, however the British were loathe to supply them to the "locals." The Belgian gun industry based around the city of Liège however had no such qualms, and supplied Martini-Henry style rifles to various countries around the globe, and many have been found in Oman.
This heavily customized and decorated example has the typical "matted" finish visible on the top of the barrel, and has a partly covered marking which may read "EUROPE MANUFACTURE" in front of the rear sight, which is marked with European style numbers. There also is a partial marking 57 on the left side of the nocks form.
As with weapons used throughout the Arabian peninsula area, the rifle has been heavily decorated with Silver bands and other embelishments. Most of these are embossed silver bands going around the fore stock, which may be original or have been replaced at some point. There is also some silver wire wrapping near the muzzle, above a "faux" steel ramrod, which has the end wrapped with more embossed silver. The wrist area is wrapped with decorative silver wire, and really looks great. There are also silver sling swivels fitted, with a primitive leather sling bearing silver buckles attached.
Condition of the rifle is good, showing quite a bit of use and wear from service. The receiver was originally fully engraved on both sides, but much of that has worn away. The action still works, but will not stay closed unless the lever snaps into place in the butt cap. It does dry fire, but we definitely do not recommend any attempt to use the rifle, as the internal components are very worn. The bore still shows rifling, but also wear, and the muzzle is quite worn, measuring almost .50 in diameter.
