Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Once a lovely double barrel hunting rifle from the 1850s made by and marked on each lock WILLIAM POWELL & SON, BIRMINGHAM, who worked as father and son from 1845 until 1880.
Recovered in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2003 this was one of 55,000 discovered and rescued from the crumbling old arsenal Lagan Silekhana.
The bores appear to be about .45 caliber, however, this fine old hunting double rifle has seen better days and was serviced and restored by Nepalese gunsmiths who left their signature on the top flat of the heavy barrels.
Nice side action locks with safety catches to each side. The walnut stock retains most of its original checkering although now faint, and it has an engraved iron cap box in the butt stock.
Both locks and tail pipe retain much original engraving, however, the front two ramrod pipes appear to be old replacements and the ramrod is absent.
In its day a fine double rifle, but today probably best as a decorative wall hanger.
