Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely Victorian Era Sea Service Rifled musket, marked on the tail of the lock plate by maker BARNES & CO / LONDON. Frederick Barnes & Co. are a known Victorian Era gunmaker, recorded in London at 3 Union Row between 1851 and 1856, 109 Fenchurch Street between 1851 and 1904, and at 67 Minories between 1851 and 1855. The Company also had premises in Birmingham between 1831 and 1903, and in Sheffield between 1839 and 1904.

This rifle was made for the commercial markings, and the "Queen's Crown" on the lock plate, but there is no V.R. underneath. as is correct. We were not able to see any markings on the barrel, however it is definitely peppered over all on the surface from the salty sea air, so we cannot see any of the original proof marks.

The rifled musket has all brass fittings, as expected for a sea service musket, and measures 46 1/2 inches long, with a 30 1/2 inch long spiral forged barrel in approximately .69 caliber. It has heavy 7 groove rifling on the interior, which we assume is original, and not from a later modification. The barrel was constructed using a breech plug / bolster, common on early percussion rifles, as it made rifling less difficult. The lock is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.

The stock is in lovely condition, having been varnished long ago, and does show some wear from service, as well as a crack on the left side between the lock screws. This starts at the breech on the left side, a common place for these stress cracks to start. There is no other major damage, and the stock has a lovely color. There are not any sling swivels on the gun, and it does not look to ever have had any.

A very nice Commercial Sea Service Rifled musket from the early Victorian Era. Ready to research and display!
