Original Item: Only One Available. This is a truly magnificent example of a "Combination Gun", which is double barrel gun where one side is a rifle, and the other a shotgun. This way the hunter would be prepared for both flying and running game. It appears to be fully Silver or German Silver mounted, complete with some silver inlay around the breech of the barrels. Almost all of the fittings are nicely engraved, including an elaborate patch or nipple box on the right side of the butt stock which is bears a very attractive seated stag. Just astounding levels of craftsmanship!
The heavy spiral Damascus finish barrels are 30" in length, with the right side being a .67" / 16 bore shotgun and the left side a .45" rifle. The gun measure 46 1/2" in overall length. The light color finish walnut stock houses twin back action locks and the maker's name MANTON appears along both lock plates, as well as the top barrel rib. JOHN MANTON was one of England's finest gunsmiths in the early part of the 19th Century, as was his brother JOSEPH, who would mentor several famous mid 19th Century gunsmiths. John's son George Henry Manton also made guns until 1854. The gun also bears LONDON proof marks under the barrel, though they can only be seen when the stock is removed. The gun comes with a brass tipped ram rod, though this may be a decorative replacement.
This Combination percussion sporting gun could have been intended for Deer Hunting in Scotland or to have been intended to be taken by a serving Army Officer to see sporting service anywhere in the Empire, India, South Africa of maybe even Canada.
