Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is truly amazing, a genuine BAKER rifle signed E. BAKER on the lock for EZEKIEL BAKER the famous British Gunsmith who apprenticed under Henry Nock and started his own establishment in 1775 at 24 Whitechapel Road in London.
In 1800 he competed with various other gun makers from England, Europe and America for the British Board of Ordnance for the supply of flintlock muzzle loading rifles for the British Army. In 1803 he was awarded the contract and the 95th Regiment were issued these rifles later becoming known as the Rifle Brigade, the first such line regiment in the British Army. The Baker Rifle has become part of British folklore with books and, television series, and films based around their use most notably Sharpe starring Sean Bean written by Bernard Cornwell. Many other British Gun Makers copied the new rifle but Ezekiel Baker was the master.
This example is signed E. BAKER and features a shorter custom 26 browned finish twist barrel indicating that it was an officer's private purchase weapon as all officers at the time furnished their own armaments, only the NCOs and other ranks were issued government purchased weapons.
This Flintlock rifle is in exceptional condition with an incredible custom 26" twist barrel that is still deeply rifled in its good looking bore. Features all brass mounts including a large brass patch box to the butt stock. Opposite side of butt stock has a check rest, meaning this was for a true marksman. The rifle is fitted with multiple flip up rear sights and the barrel bears British proof marks. The 26" barrel is 5" shorter than the Tower contract rifles for use by other rank rifleman which suggests that this short rifle was commissioned by an officer possibly even of the 95th regiment. It never had a bayonet stand which is consistent as an officer would never use a bayonet in battle as he carried a sword. Offered in overall very good condition.
