Item Description
Original Item. One of a Kind. This is truly magnificent, a BRITISH OFFICER'S flintlock pistol completely Silver mounted fully embossed with Stands of Arms, London Hallmarked for 1772. ("R"). The wood stock is walnut in absolutely pristine condition. The BRASS Barrel is London marked, and measures 9 inches in length, being partially octagonal, with a slightly flared barrel end and heavily engraved tang. Overall the pistol is 15 1/2 inches long, and is simply spectacular. The engraved steel lock plate is signed BRANDER, and in 1772 he worked in the MINORIES in London, where he was located from 1750 until 1825. The lock functions correctly, and has a half-cock safety.
With this martial scene in the decorations it was clearly intended for an Officer, perhaps in the ROYAL NAVY in that the barrel is brass and the mounts sterling silver both of which are much less affected by Sea Air. The silver escutcheon on the top of the wrist bears bears a family Crest of a Clenched Fist holding a dagger under the motto "MAN DO IT". One tiny piece of the silver adornment to the escutcheon is absent otherwise this pistol is PERFECT. The Original silver tipped ram rod has an iron screw jag at the bottom for drawing the ball on a loaded gun.
With research on the Family Crest paired with the 1772 date perhaps the name of the Officer and his family could be established, allowing a great research opportunity.
Stunning and ready to research and display!
