Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a particularly nice and scarce post 1892 Cameronians Scottish rifles shako, made of fine dark Melton cloth. To the base and welt of the body is an ornate black lace band with a thistle design. To the front of the shako is a flat patent leather peak surmounted by dark plaited cords suspended from a blackened metal thistle device. Above the cords is a strung bugle and above that a star mounted on a cord boss. Plume or Hackle is missing. The interior of the shako has a black leather sweatband. Crown is marked with crossed rifles and 4 Years as well as the original paper size label. The shako is accompanied by it’s original cap lines. A truly fine example of this scarce Cameronians Scottish rifles shako.

The Cameronians Scottish Rifles:
The cameronians was formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms by the amalgamation of two other regiments, the 26th Cameronian Regiment and the 90th Perthshire Light Infantry. The regiment saw service during the Second Boer War in South Africa, and raised 27 battalions during the First World War. The 1st Battalion saw action in Burma during the Second World War, while the 2nd Battalion was in Europe. Every new member of the regiment was issued a Bible, as a nod to Richard Cameron, after whom the original 26th Foot was named. In honour of the regiment’s first Colonel, James Douglas, Earl of Angus the tartan was that of the House of Douglas, which was worn as trews by all ranks (except the regiment’s pipers, who wore kilts) Until 1914 the regiment wore a unique full dress uniform, comprising a rifle green shako with black upright plume, rifle green doublet and Douglas tartan trews. Cameronians Scottish rifles shako.
