Original British Victorian Royal Navy Bronze Swivel Cannon Barrel with 1 5/16” Smooth Bore - dated 1863

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a very nice Victorian Era British Royal Navy bronze swivel cannon barrel, dated 1863 by the touch hole. The 20 1/2 inch long barrel features a 1 5 1/6" smooth bore and measures 5 1/2" across trunnions. These cannons were usually used on iron swivel mounts, often mounted to a ship's rail. Really nice and surprisingly heavy. Aside from the date, there is a British Broad Arrow inspection stamp above the touch hole. It is also marked R. G. F. on the end of the left trunnion, with No. 9 on the other. There also is a cross mark on the right trunnion, to help aim it.

These small cannons were most effective when loaded with canister shot (multiple balls), ideal to repel boarders. They could easily take out the bottom of any row boat, and would also devastate the boarding party. As they were relatively lightweight, they could easily be moved into the most effective position.

In very choice condition, ready to display!
