This is a unique example of a Mills Bomb and one we have not encountered before. This appears to be a factory cast example, as most were, but was not produced to accept the internal workings of the grenade or a fuse and spoon. This was made as a “memento of the Great War”, more than likely by a factory worker. The top portion of the grenade was cut away and remains attached by a working hinge. The interior has a small ceramic “shot glass” size cup which contains 6 wood matches. The black porcelain base acts as an ashtray by its appearance and is in lovely condition but does have a chip visible.
The Base Reads As:
MEMENTO OF THE GREAT WAR * ACTUAL HAND GRENADE CASTING * AS USED BY THE ALLIES * REGD NO 651542 *
The grenade no longer retains any paint but is still in wonderful condition and functions as originally intended!
Comes more than ready for further research and display.
