Original Ceylonese Sri Lankan Engraved Flintlock Horse Pistol with Silver Butt Cap - circa 1800 - 1820

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Located in the Indian Ocean southwest of the Bay of Bengal and southeast of the Arabian Sea, Sri Lanka has been called “the pearl of the Indian ocean” because of its shape and location. As such it was a desirable target during the period of European colonization, and fell under the influence of both the Portuguese and later the Dutch, who called the Island Ceylon. During the Napoleonic Wars, the Island was free for a short period, before it was taken over by the British, who conquered the Kingdom of Kandy, ending 2300 years of the reign of various monarchies on the island.

It is most likely during the period of "British Ceylon" that this very nice horse pistol was produced. There was access to the trade of the British empire, which meant that items could be imported and customized on the island. Also supplies were more readily available, though as with all territories they occupied, the British made sure to keep a few steps behind technologically.

The pistol is very similar to European pistols of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with a 13 1/2 inch .63" caliber barrel, one of the standard pistol bullets used during the British Empire period. The flintlock is very much in the European style, and may be a "trade" lock that was later engraved with the lovely designs it currently bears. There is no ramrod channel, so most likely the ramrod was carried around the neck or on the horse's tack.

Overall the pistol is quite decorated, both on the metalwork and on the wood. The silver butt cap is quite extensively engraved, though it pales in comparison to the artistry demonstrated on the steel and iron components of the pistol. The trigger guard is especially ornate.

Condition is quite good, and the flintlock mechanism is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full. The stock is in good shape, though there is some cracking along the woodline near the muzzle on the right side.

A wonderfully decorated Ceylonese pistol, ready to add to your collection!
