Item Description
Original Item: One Only. With only a 32 1/2" heavily rifled barrel, this was originally issued as a "Jaeger Rifle" to Austrian elite troops. It appears to be a conversion from Flintlock when it may well have been a smooth bore musket, or constructed as such with older Flintlock parts. It appears to have once had a standard musket rear sight installed, which was ground off during conversion.
The front barrel band is iron, while the middle barrel band, trigger guard, , butt plate, and side plate are brass. It has been fitted with a fold up multi aperture back sight and comes with its original iron ram rod. Many of these Rifles were imported by the South in the Civil War and in fact this example is marked with a faint "C.S.A." stamped into the butt stock and a second "C.S.A." poorly stamped into the brass side plate.
However, BOTH these marking we believe are spurious and added at a later date by an over enthusiastic collector.
Nevertheless many rifles of this type were in fact used in the War between the States. In overall, excellent condition, ready for display.
