Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is exactly the type of "Rifled" Musket that the Confederacy imported from Western Europe before and during the Civil War. Here we have a French Model of 1842 Rifled Musket with a back action lock. These were usually produced as smoothbore long muskets, but the export trade required rifles, indicating this was possibly made for export to the U.S. Civil War Market. This example has a lovely "service worn" look to it, with a lot of powder burn around the cap bolster. It also is in a "short musket" configuration, usually used by artillery soldiers for close range firing.
It is fully iron mounted and has had all markings removed or worn away, as was common for items imported during the Civil War, as countries did not want to be seen as "taking sides." It also looks like it may have had a bayonet stand on the right side of the barrel, which was later removed / ground away. It has the correct French style nose cap, and a small front sight with no rear sight, and a replacement wood ramrod under the barrel.
The barrel is 34" in length and the rifled musket is 49 1/2" overall. The musket has lovely patination on the iron mounts including nose cap, trigger guard, barrel bands, and small side plate. The butt plated shows a bit more advanced rusting, but no pitting or scaling. The original cap nipple is present, but broken, and the lock tumbler is worn, and will fire at both half and full cock. We checked the bore, and the four groove rifling is still fully visible, showing light wear. The bore is mostly clean, with fouling and oxidation in the grooves, as expected for a black powder muzzle loader.
A very nice example of the type of imported firearms that were used during the U.S. Civil War, particularly in the South. Ready to display
