Original Civil War Union State of New York Militia Artillery Officer Dress Coat by John Boylan

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Original Civil War Era State of New York Officer Dress Coat with Tails and shoulder boards. This is a deep blue single-breasted tail coat featuring three rows of nine New York State Seal Excelsior buttons on the front. The 1" high collar bears attractive gilt piping. Each cuff has three NY State Seal cuff buttons which are sewn upon a red colored scalloped base. The back splits into two narrow tails. Two NY State buttons are positioned at the waist above the split. A four-cuff-button ornament similar to that on the sleeves is found on each tail. The tails themselves are decorated to appear as older-style gathered tails.

Interior is lined in a cream colored cotton. The coat shows staining and wear. There are minor splits and tears to the lining on the interior. The outside remains very attractive (especially with all the brass buttons and red highlights). There is a very faded original tailor label that has been re-sewn into the neck of the jacket (upside down) it reads in part: JOHN BOYLAN, GRAND ST, NEW YORK

Most of the buttons are maker marked SCOVILL WATERBURY. If you care to look on eBay these State of New York buttons by Scovill range in price from $20 - $35 depending on condition. The ones on this jacket are in very good condition and there are 40 of them on this jacket alone! Meaning the buttons alone establish the value of this jacket.

Offered in good condition, genuine Civil War State of New York Militia material is always difficult to find.
