Item Description
Original Item: One Only. This is a Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Sword made in 1851 by the PALMETTO ARMORY of COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA. The owner of Palmetto Armory, WILLIAM GLAZER had been a manufacturer's Representative/Agent for the AMES SWORD COMPANY of CHICOPEE, MASS. In 1851 he ceased business with the Ames Sword Company and started his own venture as Palmetto Armory. Later. In 1851 he received a U.S. Government order for 2,000 of these M-1840 Heavy Cavalry Swords, and in 1852 another order for 526 Light Cavalry Swords for the Union Army.
Once the U.S. Civil War broke, out of all these "South Carolina" made Swords were seized by the Confederate States Army, which then purchased additional Swords from the Palmetto Armory.
This Sword is an "ATTIC" find, completely uncleaned and unrestored. It has a curved 36 1/4" blade with one large fuller down each side. The sword is correctly marked Columbia, S.C. at the rear of the blade. The other side is plain as only a small percentage were ever stamped Wm Gaze or Palmetto at that early time. The sword has its brass wire wrapped leather grip, which has shrunk back a tad from the rear of the brass three bat hand guard. The hilt is fully covered in old dirt, varnish and debris from probably close to 150 years of attic storage. The correct all steel scabbard is similarly covered in old rust and deterioration with only one small dent near the tip on the right side. A TRUE SLEEPER that will clean to very excellent display condition if so desired. Southern Swords of the CONFEDERATE ARA are very hard to find, this is one of the first we have ever seen.
